Going Around Beilun: Pick Your Choice
How often do you walk to work or walk back home after work? Many of us are used to take a taxi or a tricycle, drive a car or a motorcycle even if the place we're going to is just a meter away from our doorsteps. I live on campus and even if our office is just 5 minutes walk away from my dormitory, I still ride my bike to work. That's how I love my body, keeping it from any circumstances to sweat. I'm not the only one who loves transportation a lot, I know you do, too. Here in Beilun, there are 3 kinds of public short distance transport. The most popular and the cheapest (2 Yuan) is the bus. Bus stops are all over the place so it's accessible to everyone but if you hate wiggling your toes and carrying your lbs around, you better avoid the bus. Buses only load and unload passengers at designated stops so you can not just shout "PARA" to stop the bus by the time you're close to your destination. You need to wait until the bus reaches the nearest stop then that's the time for you to get off and start to walk. If you are also very particular with personal space and fresh air, don't take the bus especially during rush hour and in summer :-) (Erlinda knows why:-)). The next loved transportation in Beilun is the taxi. If you love convenience and don't mind paying for more, the taxi suits you. There are two kinds of cabs for hire in Beilun, the metered cab and the what we call here the black car because these are private cars but owners rent it to passengers if they aren't in use, they illegally operate-in short - colorum. Usually the black car divers ask for more and if you aren't keen, you have 100% chance to be ripped off. The third kind is the tricycle. It is cheaper than the taxi but more expensive than the bus, in short, the averaged priced form of Beilun transport. There are 3 kinds of tricycles here; the petrol powered and the most powerful, the motorized tricycle that is powered by a rechargeable battery, and my favorite - the muscle powered tricycle. I love taking this once in a while not only because it's cheaper but because it's slow. Beilun is a district with rising buildings everywhere but besides the mushroom like booming structures, it is also surrounded with trees and gardens and riding a very slow tricycle is a good and cheaper way to appreciate its beauty. Most of the drivers aren't young anymore but these men are still very strong. They still can pedal their way out every time we approach some hilly parts of the roads considering how much weight they have in their carriage:-). If there's a will there's a way. Riding ''traysikads'' around is much better than begging around for alms. I always have a big heart for the ''traysikad'' drivers. They are a good example of hardwork and determination and for a person who loves riding like me, I will always prefer this kind.(Short distances only)
